Lawn mowing in Hamilton works out at about $10 per 100 square metres of lawn, with a $35 minimum charge. All prices include GST.

That’s our rate, and it’s a straight bit of maths rather than a number someone picks looking at your driveway.

That’s lawn area, not section size. Your house, driveway, deck and garden beds don’t get mown, so they don’t get charged for.

Most Hamilton townhouses and new builds in Rototuna land on the $35 minimum. A standard older suburban section with lawn front and back, like a lot of the places we do in Flagstaff, usually sits somewhere between $50 and $70.

Over a year that’s about 23 cuts if you ease off over winter, or 26 if you stay fortnightly right through. So a $50 lawn costs somewhere between $1,150 and $1,300 a year.

Why a Simple Rate Per Square Metre

Because you can check it.

Most quotes in this industry are a number someone says out loud after walking around your lawn for a minute. You’ve got no way of knowing whether the neighbour with the same size lawn got told something different.

A rate per square metre means the price is the price. Same maths for every property, every time. You can pace your own lawn out and know roughly what you’re going to be told before we get there.

What Changes the Price

The rate is the starting point. A few things move it.

• Travel, if you’re out of town. Usually about $1 a minute. If you’re inside Hamilton this doesn’t apply. If you’re out past the city and it’s a twenty minute drive each way, that time has to be paid for by someone.
• How long it’s been left. A lawn mown every fortnight cuts in one pass. A lawn left two months has to be cut twice and there’s a load of clippings to deal with. Expect 25% to 50% on top for a properly overgrown lawn, and roughly double if it’s gone to seed.
• Slopes and banks. Anything we can’t get a ride-on across gets done on foot, and that takes longer.
• Obstacles. Trampolines, garden beds, a clothesline, kids’ gear, trees to work around. A wide open rectangle mows fast. A lawn with eight things in it doesn’t.
• Gate access. If the only way to the back lawn is a narrow side gate, the gear that fits through it is smaller and slower.

The overgrown surcharge is a first cut charge, not your ongoing price. Once it’s back under control you’re on the normal rate.

Why Franchise Quotes Come In Higher

If you’ve had a quote from one of the big franchise names and it came in well above what you were expecting, this is why.

A franchise operator isn’t just covering their own costs. They’re paying a franchise fee back to head office on top of everything a normal lawn business pays. Vehicle, fuel, gear, insurance, tax, and then a cut off the top of every job.

That fee has to come from somewhere, and it comes from your quote.

It’s not that franchise operators are ripping anyone off. Most of them are perfectly good at the job. It’s that they’re carrying overhead an independent operator simply doesn’t have, and the price reflects it.

Worth knowing before you assume the higher quote means better work.

Fortnightly, Monthly, or One Off

Fortnightly is what most Hamilton lawns need, and a lot of them stay fortnightly all year round.

That surprises people who’ve moved here from somewhere colder. Grass grows quick in the Waikato and it doesn’t fully stop over winter. It’s the same reason this is farming country. The soil and the rainfall that make it good for grazing make it good for lawns too, whether you want the growth or not.

Some lawns do slow down enough to stretch out to a monthly cut from about May to August. It depends on the lawn, how shaded it is, and how wet the ground stays. That’s the difference between a 23 cut year and a 26 cut year.

One off cuts cost more per visit than a regular slot. That’s not a penalty. A one off is almost always a lawn that’s got away on someone, so it’s more work, and it doesn’t get the routing efficiency a regular run does.

Prices Move With the Season

Hamilton grass slows down from June to August. It doesn’t stop. Then it goes vertical from about mid September.

Two things follow from that. Your yearly cost isn’t 52 mows, it’s 23 to 26, because winter needs fewer. And everyone books in the same three weeks in spring, so by October most local operators are full or quoting a wait.

What to Check Before You Book Anyone

The price on its own tells you nothing. Ask these:

• How did you get to that number? If they can explain it, good. If it’s a number out of thin air, you’ve got nothing to compare against.
• Is the quote the final number? It should be. You should never get an invoice higher than what you agreed to without a conversation first.
• Are they insured? If a stone comes off a mower and goes through your window, someone’s paying for it. Ask before, not after.
• Does the price include edges and trimming? It should. A cut lawn with shaggy edges looks unfinished. Some people quote low and charge trimming separately.
• Do they turn up in winter? Plenty of lawn guys go quiet from June and reappear in spring. Ask what happens over winter.
• Is there a contract? There shouldn’t be. You should be able to stop any time.
